UNESCO reported global progress in girls' education and narrowing gender gaps, while warning that early marriage and pregnancy continue to interrupt schooling. The statement was published on 8 October 2026 and updated on 14 October.

The data discussed in the report shows how broad averages can conceal differences within countries, including between urban and rural areas and between richer and poorer households. A legal right to return to school does not automatically make attendance possible.

Transport costs, childcare, safety and adequate facilities can shape whether girls continue learning. The report emphasises practical support for girls and young mothers, alongside enrolment figures, to understand who is able to remain in education.
