UNDP reviewed water, services and livelihoods initiatives in Uzbekistan's Aral Sea region in an October 15 report, highlighting interconnected environmental and economic pressures.

Examples include a rehabilitated desalination plant in Kegeyli, irrigation upgrades, digital water management and biodiversity initiatives in Nukus.

Local dried-fruit processing and beekeeping are presented as ways to add value and reduce losses. The approach combines restored services, resource management and employment opportunities; it does not portray these projects as a complete solution to the sea's decline.
