UNESCO and Sudanese partners organised a workshop in Khartoum on 12 October 2026 to help protect the heritage of displaced communities. UNESCO published details on 14 October.

The workshop brought together 25 heritage stakeholders from the seven localities of Khartoum State. It focused on improving the identification, documentation and safeguarding of threatened traditions, including knowledge, practices and crafts passed between generations.

The initiative builds on broader work assessing the effects of conflict on living heritage in six states. Its emphasis is that cultural protection extends beyond buildings and collections: it also concerns people's ability to practise traditions and share skills during displacement and recovery.
