New Zealand said on October 16 that resilience works will soon begin on State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford, supported by around NZ$40 million.
Initial work will widen a tourist stopping area and use rock to protect the roadside from Eglinton River scouring. Reinforcement of a retaining wall at Marian Hill will follow.
The highway is Milford Sound's only land access. The programme aims to reduce disruptions to communities, visitors and freight, with additional sites scheduled for later work.
