Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported on October 24 that official figures put the Baqen earthquake toll at 16 deaths and 76 injuries. The earthquake struck Xizang on October 22; the casualty assessment was dated the afternoon of October 23 and covered damaged or collapsed homes belonging to 339 households. These are dated assessments, not a final live tally.
Citing China’s earthquake monitoring network, CNA also reported 892 aftershocks by midday on October 24, most below magnitude three. The mainshock, casualty assessment and aftershock count therefore have separate reference times. Continuing aftershocks do not mean that all match the mainshock’s strength, while affected households must not be recast as a count of buildings or casualties.
