The L'Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science programme recognised Peruvian researcher Sheena Sangay for investigating root-associated fungi and their response to human activity, UNESCO reported on October 15.
She will receive $10,000 for work in Amazonian and Peruvian Yungas ecosystems. The project examines connections between fungal diversity and soil conditions.
Its findings aim to support forest conservation and sustainable soil management. Regional winners were selected from 92 applications across Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.
