Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan held separate calls with Germany’s Johann Wadephul and Cyprus’s Constantinos Kombos, QNA reported on 22 October.

The talks addressed de-escalation and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el Mandeb. The account described diplomatic consultations rather than new maritime operations or shipping restrictions.

Two different points in the shipping network

Hormuz links the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, while Bab el Mandeb connects the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. EIA explains that Gulf–Europe energy shipments can traverse multiple chokepoints. Improved passage at one would therefore not establish that the whole route is free of disruption. The reported diplomatic calls are separate from an announcement reopening a route or guaranteeing a particular voyage. EIA — June 2024.
