UNICEF estimated that 38,000 people in Panama, including 8,300 children, needed assistance following the October 9 earthquake. Its October 13 update sought US$2.5 million for response and early recovery.

Preliminary government reports cited damage to 656 educational facilities and at least 25 health facilities. These figures reflect that assessment, with needs still being evaluated.

The response includes health-service tents and assessments of water, education and child-protection needs. UNICEF made 16 tents available to health authorities to help maintain care at affected facilities.
