Yasser Abbas discussed political and field developments with Spanish Consul-General José Javier Gutiérrez Blanco-Navarrete, WAFA reported on 22 October.

The meeting covered bilateral ties and international efforts supporting Palestinian rights. Abbas welcomed Spain’s recognition of Palestine. The report referred to that existing position and did not announce fresh recognition or a new agreement.

Spain’s recognition dates to May 2024

Spain announced recognition of Palestine on 28 May 2024, linking its position to a two-state solution and East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. The consul’s meeting therefore belongs to a relationship already shaped by recognition, rather than announcing recognition anew. Separating the earlier decision from the current talks avoids presenting the praise expressed at the meeting as a new diplomatic change. La Moncloa.
