Atopic eczema alternates between calmer periods and flare-ups and is not contagious. Treatment manages symptoms, so less itching does not mean daily skin care is finished.

Continue suitable moisturising and avoid recognised triggers such as particular soaps or fabrics. Do not remove foods from a child's or breastfeeding parent's diet without medical advice. Use a pump or clean spoon rather than fingers in a shared pot.

Pain, warmth, swelling, pus or sudden deterioration need urgent assessment for infection. Emollient-contaminated fabrics can catch fire more easily; keep them away from smoking and naked flames.
