Australia designated West Peron as an identified greenhouse-gas storage formation on October 16, advancing the proposed Bonaparte carbon capture and storage project.

INPEX proposes storing up to 443 million tonnes of carbon dioxide beneath the seabed, with injection over as long as 35 years. Initial storage is expected to serve Ichthys LNG.

Development remains subject to further regulatory approvals. The declaration recognises the geological formation's suitability; it is not confirmation that injection has begun or emissions reductions have already been achieved.
