Bipolar disorder involves episodes of marked changes in mood and energy, with potentially stable periods between them. High energy, reduced need for sleep and impulsivity differ from an ordinary happy day, but do not alone establish diagnosis.

Specialists consider the history of episodes, behaviour, health and family. Recording changes helps describe the pattern rather than labelling someone from an hour's mood or social posts.

Treatment may combine medication, psychological therapy and regular routines. Do not stop medication when feeling better without advice; discuss pregnancy with your clinician. Immediate safety risks require emergency care rather than waiting.
