Analysis: shared COP labels do not mean identical mandates

UNRIC explains that biodiversity and climate conferences operate under separate processes even though both use the COP label. One addresses species and ecosystems, while the other focuses on climate change.

For readers tracking commitments, a decision cannot be transferred from one process to the other simply because the names resemble each other. Their outcomes nevertheless interact: forests and wetlands store carbon while supporting biodiversity. Our editorial conclusion is that useful coverage should identify the relevant convention and objective, rather than relying on the conference number alone.
