Bleeding gums when brushing: why a dental check matters
Bleeding or swollen gums deserve a dental assessment rather than abandoning cleaning

Bleeding or swollen gums deserve a dental assessment rather than abandoning cleaning. Plaque irritates gum tissue, and disease can progress to gum recession or loose teeth.
Prevention combines fluoride toothpaste with cleaning between teeth using floss or suitable interdental brushes. Spit after brushing rather than rinsing immediately; NHS guidance also advises against mouthwash straight after brushing.
Arrange a check for bleeding, soreness or bad breath. Severe swelling, loose teeth, a lump or mouth ulcers require an urgent dental appointment. Treatment depends on examination, not judging a photograph of the gums.
