Hearing loss: everyday signs others may notice first
Turning up the television, asking for repetition and struggling in noisy conversations may indicate hearing loss

Turning up the television, asking for repetition and struggling in noisy conversations may indicate hearing loss. Others may notice first. These signs do not automatically mean a hearing aid is required: some causes are treatable.
Assessment distinguishes wax or infection from problems needing specialist care. Meanwhile, reduce background noise and face the speaker. Do not insert cotton buds or objects to clear a suspected blockage.
Sudden loss, deterioration over days or weeks, or hearing difficulty with pain or discharge needs urgent assessment. Do not delay for a routine test or an online device purchase.
