Opinion: An accessible city gives people freedom to choose their route
Streets, transport and information should support independence in everyday journeys.

White Cane Day on 15 October prompted discussion about ease of movement. Drawing on a Petra report published the previous day, this opinion article considers what makes a city accessible.
We believe a street's success depends on whether people can use it independently, not just how attractive it looks. A route that ends in an obstruction, or a station that provides unclear information, shifts the planning burden from the service provider to the user.
People should be able to choose transport that suits them without being forced into dependence on others by inaccessible surroundings. Improvements should start with users' experiences and be reviewed again after implementation.
The aim need not be a promise to perfect an entire city at once. It calls for clear priorities, the identification and removal of barriers, and evidence of what has improved in daily journeys.
