WHO calls for stronger action to prevent lead poisoning
The organisation stresses removing exposure sources before lead reaches children's bodies.

The World Health Organization called on 15 October 2026 for faster action to prevent lead poisoning, with a focus on eliminating sources of exposure before children come into contact with them.
Sources identified by WHO include paints, cookware, cosmetics, spices, informal recycling and industrial pollution. The organisation stressed that no known safe level of exposure has been established, and that harm may occur without obvious early symptoms.
WHO is developing a global plan for presentation to the World Health Assembly in 2027, alongside a technical package to help countries prioritise action and improve oversight. This is a public-health policy announcement. Assessing an individual's exposure requires appropriate professional evaluation, rather than assumptions based on a product photograph or general symptoms.
