NASA tests solid-state batteries for harsh lunar conditions
The SPEARS research project is exploring battery designs for future instruments and vehicles.

NASA described progress on its SPEARS solid-state battery project on 14 October 2026. The technology replaces liquid electrolyte with a solid ceramic or polymer material, aiming to tolerate demanding conditions associated with lunar exploration.
Thermal-vacuum testing showed small cells operating at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius and performing well down to minus 60 degrees, with reduced performance at minus 80 degrees.
Surviving very low temperatures is different from operating at those same temperatures: a battery may need warming before use. These remain research prototypes rather than commercially available products. Potential applications include future scientific instruments, vehicles and other exploration equipment.
