NASA has outlined its contribution to Japan's MMX mission, which will study Mars' moons and collect material from Phobos. Its support includes a gamma-ray and neutron instrument, a surface sampler and communications services.
The mission targets arrival at Mars in August 2027 and sample return in 2031. NASA will curate about 15% of the returned material.
Researchers hope the evidence will clarify whether the moons formed after an impact or were captured asteroids.
