Sinusitis: why antibiotics are not always the answer

A blocked nose, facial pain and reduced smell can follow a cold. NHS guidance explains that sinusitis is usually viral, so antibiotics are not routinely the answer to every episode.

Swelling obstructs mucus drainage. That explains the pressure without proving a bacterial infection. Rest, fluids and avoiding smoking or allergy triggers can help; treatment depends on the cause and severity.

Persistent or recurring symptoms need assessment. Feeling very unwell, worsening symptoms, pain unrelieved by suitable pain relief, or a weakened immune system warrant urgent medical advice rather than prolonged home treatment.
