Tooth decay: why waiting for pain can miss early damage
Tooth decay may initially cause no symptoms before pain, sensitivity or a cavity develops

Tooth decay may initially cause no symptoms before pain, sensitivity or a cavity develops. Waiting for discomfort therefore cannot replace dental check-ups; your dentist can advise on their frequency.
Early damage and a cavity are different stages. Prescribed fluoride treatment may reverse early decay, while a hole may need a filling. Damage reaching the pulp changes treatment options and cannot be assessed at home.
Limit sugary foods and drinks, use fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. Pain, sensitivity or discoloration warrant assessment instead of waiting for more severe discomfort.
