Ukraine opened its first national laboratory equipped with transmission electron microscopy for asbestos detection on October 16, supported by Japanese funding, UNDP and the health ministry.
The facility will analyse fibres in building debris to inform sorting, demolition and safe recycling decisions. UNDP said preparations for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and specialist training would continue after the opening. Initial samples will come from UN-supported debris management projects, so the announcement should not be read as confirmation that accreditation has already been completed.
