Osteoarthritis causes pain, stiffness and movement difficulties, with widely varying severity. NHS guidance supports appropriate exercise and weight management where needed; diagnosis involves symptoms and examination.

The aim is neither ignoring pain nor overloading a joint, but choosing a suitable activity plan, sometimes with physiotherapy. Prolonged morning stiffness can suggest another condition requiring assessment.

Seek advice when symptoms persist or interfere with daily tasks. Osteoarthritis does not inevitably worsen or require surgery for everyone: treatment choices depend on function, severity and response to earlier measures.
