A panic attack can combine intense fear, a racing heart, sweating and breathlessness. These symptoms overlap with other illnesses: new chest pain or breathing difficulty should not be self-diagnosed as panic.

After assessment, calm breathing and reminders that an episode will pass can form part of a therapist-agreed plan. Avoiding situations through fear of another attack can expand the cycle of anxiety.

Recurring attacks and persistent fear of recurrence deserve professional review. CBT and prescribed medication are available options. Do not adjust treatment yourself or interpret slow improvement as personal failure.
