Brief low mood can follow childbirth, but persistence, worsening or difficulty coping deserves help. Lost enjoyment, guilt or inability to sleep even when rest is possible can warrant assessment.

There is no need to wait for every symptom; fathers and partners can experience depression too. Ask for practical support with childcare and chores, and discuss feelings with a healthcare professional without blame.

Treatment may include therapy and medication compatible with breastfeeding. Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby need urgent assessment. For immediate danger, contact emergency services and involve a trusted person to stay and help keep the baby safe.
